@Dior
That sounds like a poor VPN or a crowded server. What service do you use? Also, are you connected to a nearby server? A solid VPN should manage those speeds. Sure, if you’re hitting gigabit speeds, then VPNs might struggle unless you opt for a business-level service, which costs a lot more than typical consumer options. This really highlights the saying, ‘you get what you pay for’ when it comes to cheaper VPNs having more users competing for limited bandwidth.

If you have a VPN, there isn’t much reason not to keep it on from startup.
@fartingbob what do you do for sites like ova? I have to turn off my VPN just to access them.
@Dale
Some services just don’t play well with VPNs if they know you’re using one. A good VPN should have plenty of servers and change IPs regularly to avoid being blocked. It’s a continual back-and-forth; sometimes, the service will detect a VPN and restrict it.
@Fern
I didn’t read the entire letter. I hated seeing the word ‘stream’ in my email. I didn’t realize the studio could see your IP address through a site. I thought they’d only pursue the content host. Wow.
Thanks for explaining.
@Marley
The same thing happened to me a few months back. I was downloading a hot new release and forgot my VPN was off. I got an email about it a few days later.
@Marley
AT&T doesn’t really care, but studios pay groups to track IPs that are downloading popular torrents and report them to ISPs for DMCA actions.
I just use direct downloads.

I haven’t been downloading lately. Where can I find direct download options for stuff like that?

Fitgirl typically offers direct download options for games, and Steamrip too (not sure if Steamrip is still safe or not, check the megathread for that).
@Tobin
Oh yes, it is.

That’s good to hear. Pirate sites change so often; I always feel cautious.
@Tobin
With direct downloads, is there a size limit unless you pay? I haven’t used them in a while; I remember being frustrated years ago because they would split files into parts. I’d get through most, but then wait for the last one. Megaupload was the worst for that, and I had issues with files cancelling halfway through, forcing me to restart. Torrents have been much easier.
@Channing
Direct downloads do have their issues. Some hosts limit speeds, but most don’t require downloading in parts anymore. Many hosts have good speeds, especially for games with few seeders.
Using torrents sometimes slowed my PC, so I try to avoid them when possible.
With a reliable host, direct downloads can be quicker because they only depend on your internet speed and not the number of seeders. If you have a solid connection, it should be fast.
@Tobin
Are most hosting sites free now, or is it still a mix? Can’t imagine they’d all be free.

There’s still a mix, with luck involved. Some may be slow when free but fast if you pay, while others are fast when free and even faster when paid. It’s really about luck.

Fitgirl repacks are popular with many.
Cs.rin.ru is good for recent games and updates.

For real, no one cares here.
ISPs probably use pirated software more than we do.

I was shocked to learn that in the US, people get scary letters if they torrent. In my country, ISPs don’t care at all.

That’s true, coming from Thailand.
