Which VPN do you recommend? Don’t they usually slow down the downloads?

All VPNs will slow your speeds a bit, it’s normal but not crazy slow.
For recommendations, check out the megathread.
@Shane
Thanks for the tip!
Proton VPN (paid version) is excellent. No logs on servers and works well. I don’t even bother setting my torrent app to stop if the VPN fails. I just use a permanent kill switch that cuts my internet anytime that happens. Sometimes my speed increases since Comcast throttles my internet if they think it’s not important. Netflix often gets throttled.
@Fern
That sounds appealing! I’ll definitely check that out, thank you! Can you also change your location with it?

I’d suggest Mullvad.

I use Proton. It has extra features like dark web monitoring.

I highly recommend checking out this spreadsheet to find a good VPN. Hope it helps!

Are you using torrent or direct download?
Direct downloads are typically safe without a VPN. With torrents, make sure to bind your VPN to your torrent client.
How do you bind your VPN? I use PIA and QBittorrent and didn’t realize it required more than just turning it on.
@Marley
You can do split tunneling with PIA. Set it to only use the VPN for certain programs.

Will I be in trouble if I don’t bind my VPN?

Yes, you could be traced since your data will be on the torrent tracker.
Then it depends on whether the copyright owners take action against you. If they push your ISP, that’s when you might get those warnings.
Using split tunneling allows the VPN to stay active, but just routes certain programs through it. This way, other activities like browsing and streaming will remain at normal speed without getting affected.

Torrents are fun, right?
Waiting can feel like a drag sometimes.

I use QBittorrent and Mullvad and I never bind anything. It’s never been an issue.

As far as I know, streaming and direct downloads usually aren’t a problem unless they physically check your device, which is very rare!

Direct download issues are two-fold. 1. The links are often dead shortly after posting. 2. The files are usually either huge, like 5GB for 2160p, or 60GB for the full 1:1 rip.

I use both direct downloads and torrents. I have a VPN, but I sometimes forget to turn it on, since AT&T didn’t seem to mind before, at least not for me. But I guess they are being stricter now, lol.
@Marley
If you have a VPN, there isn’t much reason not to keep it on from startup.
