Setting Up a Router for Several WireGuard Connections at Once

I need help configuring my router so that it can handle several WireGuard connections at once. I would want to use WireGuard to route various gadgets to different locations.

Does anybody know of any particular setup instructions or custom firmware that would enable me to accomplish this? Any advice or suggestions would be very valued!

This is what my ASUS router does. I have the ability to route every single connection through a separate wireguard site.

Which router do you have? Is it a modified firmware or the native one?

Oh, I tried doing this once and ended up bricking my router. :joy: Make sure you have a backup router or a lot of patience.

@Sully, you might want to look into OpenWrt or DD-WRT. They have great community support for custom firmware. And yes, I bricked mine too once. But only once… so far. :upside_down_face:

@Whitman, only once? That’s impressive. I’m on my third router this year.

I use pfSense on a small PC instead of a router, and it’s amazing! I set up multiple WireGuard connections, each for different clients. It’s super flexible. But yeah, it’s also super nerdy.

@Maggie I feel personally attacked by that “super nerdy” comment. :joy: Anyway, pfSense is awesome, but you gotta be ready to invest some time and learn the CLI. It’s like a whole different world.

@James But how’s the performance? I’m skeptical a Raspberry Pi can handle multiple WireGuard tunnels with good speed.

@Dannyglover My Pi handles it fine, actually! It’s more about the network speed and less about the Pi’s processing power. Though, it’s also important that the Pi doesn’t start baking cookies with all that heat. :joy:

@Liinda I thought that was an air fryer, not a router. Anyway, I’ve got WireGuard running on an EdgeRouter X. No problems so far, just don’t ask me how I set it up… because I don’t remember.

@Sully It’s an ASUS RT-AX86U, and it’s the native firmware. But I think it also has OpenWrt support if you want to get a bit wild with customization.

@Trevor Awesome, thanks! Might try the native firmware first before I start playing around with custom stuff. Appreciate the tips, everyone!
