Routers Compatible With ProtonVPN

Has anyone been able to setup ProtonVPN on their router and make it function consistently? I now have the Asus RT-AX58U router, and when ProtonVPN is active, it sporadically disconnects and slows. Troubleshooting with ProtonVPN support has not addressed the issue, and I have tried everything from OpenVPN to Wireguard. Trying various servers. It didn’t matter. And my entire network is hardwired (router into cable modem, PC into router), so wireless is not an issue.

I’m not wanting to do any more tinkering; I simply want a router that can run ProtonVPN reliably.

I’m using the WireGuard client on a GL-iNet MT6000 (Flint 2). It works perfectly.

Check out Pfsense or OpNsense.

I have an AX86U and haven’t had any issues with two simultaneous VPN connections.

I’m running ProtonVPN on a UDM Pro with six connections, no issues 24/7. It barely uses any CPU. I bypass Proton traffic for my laptop, phone, and TV, so it mostly handles my smart home devices that don’t support VPNs.

VPN Fusion (or Merlin) is a bit much for most setups, but it’s amazing on the ROG Rapture GT-AXE16000. Link

I have Wireguard working on my OPNSense FW for home. And my little GL-iNet Beryl AX (AX3000) travel router. No issues.
