Is there substantial data use if I leave a VPN program running on an Android system but do not stream?

It should use the same amount of data as if there were no VPN, however my box turns itself off when it senses that the TV is off; this may vary depending on the type.
Never thought of it that way before
So just because the VPN software indicates it’s been connected for 18 hours doesn’t imply it’s exchanging data all the time?

It’s only a matter of timing; if nothing else is going in the background, it shouldn’t transport any data save software updates.
