What are the consequences of using Proton VPN on a 24/7 basis? Is there any?
I keep my VPN and kill switch on all the time on my phone. No real downside, except some apps like Android Auto for cars and certain websites (like Equifax) may not work. On my PC, I haven’t yet set it up to always use VPN with Steam or multiplayer games.
There are some drawbacks. While your privacy is protected, it can affect convenience. For example, VPNs sometimes struggle with streaming services like Disney+. You might notice more battery drain, slower internet speeds, and certain search results appearing as ads.
Personally, I only use VPN for specific apps. Also, if you use Chromecast, having a VPN on all the time (with kill switch) can block casting, even if you’re using split tunneling.
I use my VPN (Secure Core/Stealth) all the time. On my Pixel 7 Pro, I do notice slightly more battery drain, but that might just be because my battery is aging. There’s also a bit of a slowdown in download speeds and occasional connection drops, which I manually reconnect. But overall, it’s worth it for privacy, and I wouldn’t change it.
Your phone can double as a hand warmer.
There aren’t many downsides, except for a slight increase in battery usage. Some apps, like banking apps, might not work, and many websites block VPNs. But overall, it’s fine—I keep my VPN on 24/7 on my phone, and it doesn’t overheat, even in hot and humid conditions.
