Which VPN server can I build on Azure?

Hey folks,

I have a MacBook Pro and want to connect natively to a VPN server that I want to setup on Azure.

Which servers can I install?

For sure, OpenVPN or WireGuard are good options! If you’re using a MacBook, both will work natively with the right config files. WireGuard is super fast compared to OpenVPN, but OpenVPN has been around longer, so it’s got more support if you run into issues.

Another option is SoftEther VPN—it’s really flexible and supports a bunch of protocols (OpenVPN, L2TP/IPSec, SSTP). You can set it up on Azure and then use your MacBook to connect via L2TP/IPSec, which macOS supports natively. Plus, SoftEther’s pretty robust when it comes to bypassing firewalls. :fire:

Yo, don’t sleep on Pritunl either. It’s like a fancy GUI for OpenVPN, and you can deploy it on Azure. I use it for my VPN setup, and it’s super easy to manage. Works great with macOS, and you can import the OpenVPN config directly into your Mac’s network settings. It’s like OpenVPN but with less headache.

I’d recommend WireGuard for sure. It’s fast, modern, and macOS has a native WireGuard client, so connecting is super simple. Just set it up on an Azure VM, get the config files, and you’re good to go. OpenVPN is great too, but WireGuard’s speed is on another level! :rocket:

Yeah, WireGuard’s a game changer. I set mine up on Azure, and it was a breeze. You just spin up a VM, install WireGuard, and then copy the config to your Mac. Takes like 10 minutes tops once you get the hang of it. :ok_hand:

If you’re going with OpenVPN, you could also look into using Algo VPN—it’s a script that sets up a VPN server for you. It’s super easy and supports WireGuard, OpenVPN, and IKEv2, which works natively with macOS. No need to fiddle with too many settings; it does most of the heavy lifting. :+1:

Yeah, Algo is basically plug-and-play for VPN setups. If you’re not super techy, it’s a lifesaver. Just run the script, and you’ll have a VPN running on Azure in no time. Super secure too since it uses modern encryption. :closed_lock_with_key:
