Which VPN provider are you using these days

Hi everyone I have been using Surfshark for a while now and I feel pretty happy with it. It does everything I need without any issues and even comes with some nice extra features too.

My annual plan runs out in a few months and I’m looking to see what else is available since I chose Surfshark mainly because it had a big discount at the beginning. For a new provider, I only need privacy, the option to torrent public domain stuff, and a static IP. Are there any other good options you can suggest? I just like to have choices Thanks in advance

Mullvad is not suitable for torrenting now since they removed port forwarding support, so they aren’t great for what the person who posted is looking for. I moved to TorGuard after that.

@Foster
If you’re looking for alternatives to Mullvad, check out AirVPN

@Foster
I often torrent with Mullvad and never have any problems, I always download at my maximum connection speed.

Without port forwarding, you can only connect to peers that also have port forwarding, which limits the number of peers available to you.

Great for you that it works, but it won’t be as effective for others. If everyone was like you, no one would connect to anyone else. So, Mullvad isn’t a good choice if you’re looking to torrent. I used to like Mullvad too, but when they got rid of port forwarding, I moved to another provider.

By the way, I’m downvoted a lot currently. Anyone who downvoted care to explain? This is accurate advice as far as I can tell.

@Foster
Lol you are completely right and it’s weird to see people downvoting you

@Foster
So which VPN are you using now?

I’m still using TorGuard, they support port forwarding and work really well.

@Foster
Ah, this explains the difficulties I’ve faced connecting to others. It still works somewhat, but not like before they removed port forwarding. Unfortunately, I just signed up for a year before that change. I’ll stay with them until the end of the year and then try a different VPN.

@Foster
I can’t stand those random downvotes as well, it’s frustrating. People just click downvote because someone else did without explaining it.

@Foster
I forwarded the port through my router and I see the green icon in my torrent client when using Mullvad. Port forwarding isn’t critical for torrenting but means you’re a passive node. You can download and seed, just with active nodes, which means those with port forwarding, but without it, you only connect with other passive nodes.
So, it’s not a must but would help you connect with more peers. If you have enough seeds, you likely won’t notice much of a difference.

@Brooke
Forwarding the port on your router allows peers to connect to you directly, which defeats the purpose of using Mullvad since you want all traffic to go through them.

If your client is showing you have a working port forwarded while using Mullvad, that means part of your traffic isn’t running through Mullvad and that’s a problem.

Also, saying that port forwarding isn’t required for BitTorrent just means you can only connect with active nodes without it.

So without it, you’re actually restricting your options and why recommend a less effective solution, when others are available at a similar price? Just saying.

I totally get the dislike for Mullvad because they dropped port forwarding, but I still use them and for basic needs (not torrenting for me) they are fine. The speed does sometimes drop (around 5 Mbps), but that’s part of the VPN experience for most people.

@Jordy
I agree, I liked Mullvad for a long time, I was sad to stop using them. If they ever bring back port forwarding, I’d certainly consider switching back.

If your need for a public IP is to port forward for a service, then Mullvad will not work since they stopped allowing that. The same goes for torrenting.

Really seems to cut out a lot of use cases

Are there decent VPNs that allow port forwarding? Looks like it might be tough in the future due to legal issues.

@Grayer
Right now, I’m using AirVPN but there are other good options too. You can check out The FreeMediaHeckYeah wiki for a great list.
