Although I’m unsure of the impact a VPN would have on the family, I’m considering purchasing one. Although they are well known for their emphasis on privacy and security, would they also apply to game consoles and other such devices, or would they only apply to computer use? Regards
If you don’t know why you need a VPN you don’t need a VPN
Every computer or gadget in your home that uses the internet will be impacted if your VPN is configured in your router. This computer alone will be affected if you set it up on one.
Preventing your ISP from spying on you and websites from knowing your actual IP address is the biggest advantage.
Longer latency, more captchas, and occasionally even websites or services banning you are the biggest inconveniences (Netflix for instance). By creating rules prohibiting certain websites and services from using VPNs, you may stay away from them.
(I assume you’re referring to commercial VPNs, not ones you make yourself.
You’re right; I assumed that the VPN would always be connected to the entire network as I didn’t realize it might initially only be on CPUs. Thanks for the explanation; it makes a lot more sense.
A VPN protects any device on your network, even game consoles. Although it may cause a minor slowdown in performance, it works well for device-to-device security and privacy.
Well, that depends. Yes, if you set it up on your router or any other device that controls all network traffic. However, the VPN will only be used by that one machine if it is the only one being used.
