Question Hello! I recently purchased ProtonVPN, but I don’t really know anything about VPNs. I noticed a lot about Proton and decided to get it as I wanted something that would operate with my Chromebook and be free to use.
You are not given the option to select the country you connect to while using ProtonVPN’s free edition. All I wanted was a VPN to conceal my location and other details. I intended to just connect to the US, but the VPN selected a different nation. I take it that in order for a country to conceal your information, you have to be connected to it?
Since I truly didn’t want to be tied to a random nation, it would be amazing if I could remain unconnected to a nation while still keeping my city information and other details secret.
I apologize if this is a silly question. I’m not too knowledgeable with VPNs.
If you download the OpenVPN configuration files and use OpenVPN instead of their extension, you may select the nation in the free version. If not, I may still select from the Netherlands, the United States, and Japan because I had downloaded those files.
This is functional, but you are unable to select the server depending on use; you can only download and utilize the connection for one of the servers in that nation.
Not at all a stupid question! The free version of ProtonVPN conceals your IP address and location even if you are unable to select the nation. For greater control over the location, you can upgrade.
In actuality, it links you to the quickest server that is accessible, which is located in the Netherlands if you live in Europe. but, if you’re in America, it’s nearly hard to connect to the Japan or Netherlands servers.
Yo! No worries, that ain’t a dumb question at all. VPNs can be a bit confusing at first. So, with ProtonVPN’s free plan, yeah, it picks the country for you. But the point is to hide your IP, which includes your city info. So, it doesn’t really matter which country it connects to; your real location is hidden either way. You’re good, don’t stress!
Wait, so you can’t pick a specific country on the free plan? That’s kinda annoying. I guess that’s the trade-off for not paying though. But yeah, as long as your real location is hidden, you’re good to go. You’re basically invisible online, no matter where the VPN connects you.
