[macOS] Is ProtonVPN incompatible with Apple services like iMessage or iCloud?

I am typically happy with Mullvad.

Sadly, Mullvad interferes with essential Apple services. iCloud Drive, FaceTime, and so forth. These services are not functional when Mullvad is enabled. Mullvad is completely functional when it is turned off. Even if I enjoy Mullvad, these pauses are interfering with my daily job.

Do any macOS users who also own iPhones experience any of these ProtonVPN problems?

Nope, not that I can tell. I had no problems. only through unofficial programs like Spotify.

Every Apple service, particularly iCloud, is incompatible with VPNs. Most of the time it does, but occasionally it doesn’t. The file you upload to iCloud fails to sync. After turning off the VPN, it instantly syncs.

This is not a problem we are experiencing. We utilize many Macs, iPhones, and iPads with Proton VPN. Never experienced any problems with synchronization, or any problems at all.

Certain apps and services are exempt from some VPN policies. Here, one may switch to game mode and add whatever they’d want to their whitelist.

With the exception of the occasional instance when I attempt to make a call from my Mac via my iPhone or when someone phones me on my iPhone and it should appear that I am receiving a call on my Mac, I have ProtonVPN installed on my Mac virtually all the time. I have never experienced any problems with iCloud or iMessage. Occasionally, they fail to connect, and the Mac prompts me to confirm that the Mac and iPhone are connected to the same network.

It happens occasionally, but it’s so uncommon that I haven’t really tried to fiddle with it.

I haven’t experienced any problems with any other Apple services, only the iOS app store and the (very little used) iCloud online service.

I can attest that iCloud+ Private Relay is incompatible with Mullvad and other VPNs. On Mac, Mullvad functions seamlessly, therefore you should review the Mullvad settings.

You cannot use Google Translate on the webpage directly when Proton VPN is enabled.

Specifically, he’s discussing facetime, messaging, etc. It is a known bug that none of them function when split tunneling or Mullvad is enabled.

I meant that Mullvad has no additional effects other than Private Relay. There is no requirement for Private Relay when utilizing VPN. Mullvad cannot be the cause of my texting or Facetime issues, therefore that rule out Mullvad as the culprit. He can get in touch with Mullvad to troubleshoot if he thinks so.

I’m not sure why you’re so insistent, but there are four or five bug reports on github that all detail how fundamental services on Mac OS 15.0 RC are entirely interrupted. included this man and me.

Yes, I’m using 12.7.2.6; there don’t seem to be any issues with regular use. But I got so tired of captchas that I had to uninstall Proton VPN. I’m still waiting for the issues to be resolved.

Please take notice that Proton only supports on at boot automation and does not enable split tunneling. It was for this reason that I quit using Proton. There are a few problems with it on Mullvad, but maybe these are fixed soon.

I use my iPhone with ProtonVPN. My kill switch is activated. iMessage and FaceTime have never caused me any trouble.

Using ProtonVPN with Apple Music is giving me trouble. I’m limited to what I’ve previously downloaded or stored because I have my VPN enabled. Apple Music will not be searched globally by Music. This happens to me on both iOS and Android. There aren’t any more issues with Apple services to report.
