After almost 3 hours of trying to resolve the issue with split tunneling, NordVPN staff told me that this is essentially a dead feature and it doesn’t work properly with Windows.
It’s been working fine for me so far.

That’s surprising. NordVPN confirmed that split tunneling doesn’t work on Windows due to its limitations.

Then why is it enabled and seemingly working on mine?
@Daryl
Just because it’s enabled doesn’t mean split tunneling is functioning correctly.

I’ll double-check when I get home and see if my IP changes correctly between split tunnel and VPN.

Just tested it. My app shows my real IP, while everything going through the VPN shows the VPN IP. So it seems like it’s working fine for me.
@Daryl
You might be seeing different IPs, but the issue is with how Windows 11 handles split DNS. Even the NordVPN developers acknowledged that it doesn’t work correctly.

Well, I can tell you it works fine for my apps and games. They use my real IP without detecting the VPN.
@Daryl
It’s just strange that the developers say it doesn’t work on Windows 11, yet you’re saying it does.

It should work if you have multiple network cards, like using both WiFi and Ethernet.

Comodo Dragon is a different story. Try using Brave and Steam with split tunneling, and you’ll see it doesn’t work.

Set Brave to only connect through the VPN, but keep Steam outside the VPN. It won’t work because Windows 11 can’t handle split DNS correctly due to software limitations.
Yeah, NordVPN’s split tunneling is a mess. I use OpenVPN for work, and even with split tunneling enabled and OpenVPN listed as bypassing the VPN, it still routes through Nord.
NordVPN also messes with my routing table in ways it shouldn’t. I’ve tried setting a persistent route for my work servers, but Nord still overrides it. I don’t understand how they’re rated #1 all the time. It’s not based on reviews from anyone who needs more than just a basic on/off VPN service.
I’m looking for an alternative that doesn’t hijack my entire system.
@Taron
If you’re comfortable configuring your own routes, try uninstalling the Nord app and using a manual OpenVPN connection instead. You’ll have full control and can split the traffic as needed.
It’s not ideal, but at least you’ll get some use out of Nord until your subscription runs out.
