I’m curious about how effective VPNs really are. How reliable are the providers? And do I even need one for what I do online? How would people compare a paid VPN with the free Tor browser?
Tor is awesome for keeping your identity safe but it can be slow. A paid VPN is faster but you have to trust the provider. It really depends on whether you want privacy or speed.

The speed of a VPN does come with the need to trust the provider. But it really depends on what information you shared when you signed up. If you didn’t use your real name or address, you won’t have to worry about them selling your info.
What exactly are you trying to do online? If you share that, we might offer better advice.
While Tor is a good option, it slows down your connection more than a VPN does. Plus, it doesn’t manage certain types of traffic and is blocked more often than a VPN. You also miss out on some browser features since extensions aren’t allowed in Tor Browser. Generally, a VPN can be a better choice.
As others have mentioned, it all comes down to why you are online. If you just want to browse, Tor is a good choice. Simple to set up and it offers decent privacy. Your data makes a few stops at different servers before getting back to you, which helps protect your identity but can slow things down.
For sharing files or streaming, a VPN is better suited as it can handle that traffic well. Just make sure you trust the provider and stay away from free options.
Keep in mind that Tor isn’t really a replacement for a VPN. In fact, you should consider using a VPN alongside the Tor browser.
They are two very different tools.

Could you clarify that? I’m not well-versed in this stuff.
